Translation

One hornet's nest; put one grain each of pepper and Sichuan pepper into every cell, set it in a bowl, fill with water, add three finger-sized slices of phellodendron, cover with a saucer and seal with paper; steam it in a double boiler for the burning of one stick of incense, take it out, wait until it is warm, and hold it in the mouth and rinse a good while, then spit it out.

Clinical commentary 臨床

One stick of incense is about half an hour, and it is the chapter's usual way of timing a decoction. Every cell of the nest packed with a peppercorn is a good deal of work for a mouthwash. The name is 噙漱, to hold in the mouth and rinse, which is how all six of the section's washes are used — held until the mouth is warmed, then spat out and never swallowed. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
