Mussel Frost Powder

Bangsang-san

한글 방상산  ·  Pinyin Bang Shuang San

蚌霜散

This entry was first registered as a cross-reference shell: the Hyeol chapter cites the formula with 方見諸傷 and gives only the indication, and this leaf in the Injuries chapter carries the composition. The composition is given as 各等分 with no absolute weights, and grams are entered at 40 each as a notional equal share. The entry's source is now this leaf's label, 入門, in place of the placeholder it carried as a shell.

Clinical commentary 臨床

酒食醉飽後, 低頭, 掬損 — bending the head when drunk and full, and straining — is the same mechanism as Sijaebaekchul-san's, and the Hyeol chapter's two entries for a bleed brought on by effort rather than illness. 蚌霜, mussel frost, is calcined mussel shell, and the formula is an astringent powder: shell calcined to calcium oxide and carbonate, hearth soot, and a glutinous rice drink to carry it. Charcoal and chalk taken by mouth do nothing for a bleeding point in the oesophagus or the stomach, and the glutinous rice drink is the only part of the prescription with any claim on the mucosa. Haematemesis after trauma or after violent retching is a Mallory-Weiss tear, a ruptured varix or a gastric erosion, and large-volume vomiting of blood is an emergency: it is diagnosed and treated endoscopically, with transfusion where needed. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
