Donguibogam

Translation

Taken regularly it lengthens the years and extends the life. Deer antler glue, deer antler residue, cuscuta seed, arborvitae seed and prepared rehmannia, 8 nyang each; white poria and psoralea, 4 nyang each. Grind them to a fine powder and make pills with rice paste boiled in wine, or melt the antler glue in good wine and make pills the size of a parasol-tree seed with that; take fifty at a dose down with a decoction of ginger and salt. ○ Long ago in Shu there was an old man who sold this medicine in the market and said of himself that he was three hundred and eighty years old. He would always sing: the tailgate unguarded, the blue sea runs dry; of the nine-times-turned golden elixir all the talk is idle; only the pearl on the spotted dragon's crown can replenish the blood below the jade hall's gate. One who studied his way was given this formula, and the old man turned into a white crane and flew off, and no one knows where he ended. — Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · Sinhyeong)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The spotted dragon is the deer, and the pill is built on antler in two forms at once — the glue boiled from it and the residue left after boiling — with cuscuta, arborvitae seed and prepared rehmannia behind them and only poria and psoralea in support. It is one of the tradition's standing longevity formulas, and the Bogam prints the market-seller's song with it rather than any clinical reasoning, which is a fair indication of the register it belongs to. **Deer antler is a protected-animal material in many jurisdictions and the three-hundred-year claim is a sales pitch; the entry is printed as history.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
