Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治孕婦傷寒, 安胎. 白朮ㆍ黃芩各等分, 剉, 新瓦上同炒香. 右爲末, 每三錢, 薑三棗一, 煎水調下. 或同煎服亦可, 最妙. 《寶鑑》

Translation

Treats cold damage in a pregnant woman and quiets the fetus. Atractylodes and scutellaria in equal parts, cut up and dry-fried together on a new tile until fragrant. Powder the above and take 3 don at a time, stirred into water decocted with three slices of ginger and one jujube; or the drugs may be decocted together and drunk, which also serves, and is best of all. — Bogam 寶鑑 (Donguibogam · Buin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two herbs, and they are the pair the tradition settled on for pregnancy: atractylodes to hold the centre and keep the fetus seated, scutellaria to take the heat out of the womb. Danxi's rule that these two are the sage drugs of pregnancy stands behind every fetus-quieting formula in the chapter, and here nothing has been added to them at all. Frying both together on a new roof tile until they smell toasted is a dry-heat step that takes the cold edge off the scutellaria and the oily sharpness off the atractylodes — a mild drug made milder, which is the whole intent in a pregnant patient. The ginger and jujube are in the vehicle rather than the powder. A fever in pregnancy needs to be told apart from the things that mimic it, and this formula was written for an ordinary febrile illness and nothing more. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
