Parting Powder

Byeolli-san

한글 별리산  ·  Pinyin Bie Li San

別離散

The transcription writes 天旅 for 天雄 and runs 附子肉桂 together without a separator; the formula's own subtraction clause — 去雄ㆍ附ㆍ薑ㆍ桂 — names the four by their first graphs and settles both readings. 菖蒲 here is 石菖蒲.

Translation

Treats Heart wind as illness, where the man dreams of a woman and the woman of a man. This is used to drive the evil out so that it is not seen again, and that is why it is called Parting. White atractylodes 1 nyang; tianxiong aconite, aconite, cinnamon bark, dry ginger and madder root 3 don each; skimmia leaf and mulberry mistletoe 5 don each; asarum and acorus 2 don each. Powder the above and take 2 don at a time, stirred into plain hot water on an empty stomach. Where there is heat, remove the tianxiong, the aconite, the ginger and the cinnamon, and add anemarrhena and phellodendron 3 don each, Korean angelica and rehmannia 5 don each. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Mong)

Clinical commentary 臨床

**Contains tianxiong and aconite main root, both toxic, together with skimmia leaf, which is also toxic. This must not be prepared.** The name is the method: the dream-figure is treated as an evil presence to be parted from, and the formula is a warm, acrid, wind-dispersing powder aimed at driving it off rather than at settling the Spirit. White atractylodes alone carries a third of the weight and is the only ingredient doing supplementation; everything around it is hot and moving. The subtraction for a heat pattern is the interesting part — strip out all four warm ingredients and put in anemarrhena, phellodendron, angelica and rehmannia, and what is left is a cool blood-supplying formula. In practice the heat-pattern version, built on the four substitutions and without the aconites, is the only form of this prescription that can be used at all. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
