Translation

Treats white discharge in a stout person, this being damp phlegm. Atractylodes lancea, phellodendron, ailanthus root bark, pumice, processed pinellia, roasted arisaema, cnidium, cyperus and dry ginger, in equal parts. Powder the above and bind with a vinegar paste into pills the size of parasol-tree seeds; take 50–70 pills with plain boiled water. In the summer months leave out the dry ginger and put talcum in its place. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Po)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The twin of Geumbaekjeopi-hwan, and the pair is the chapter's clearest piece of constitutional thinking: in a thin patient discharge is heat, in a stout one it is damp phlegm. Both pills are built on ailanthus bark and phellodendron and both are bound with vinegar, but where the thin patient's version adds two cooling drugs and keeps peony in to protect the blood, this one adds the phlegm group — pinellia, arisaema and pumice — with atractylodes lancea on top and dry ginger underneath to keep the drying from turning cold. The summer substitution is the detail that shows the formula was used. Dry ginger comes out and talcum goes in when the weather itself is hot and damp, which leaves the structure intact and changes only its temperature. **Contains pinellia and arisaema, which are toxic raw. Both must be properly processed, as the leaf specifies, and this must not be prepared otherwise.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
