淸氣化痰丸

Name collision. A formula called 淸氣化痰丸 was already registered from the Uibang Go (醫方考) — bile-processed arisaema, pinellia, trichosanthes, scutellaria, tangerine peel, bitter orange, apricot kernel and white poria. Only three medicinals overlap and the sources differ, so the two are distinct formulas sharing a name. This entry carries the -dansim suffix for its source, following the source-based suffix rule. Both 6.5.4.1 and 6.20.14 point here.

Treats heat phlegm. Pinellia (processed) 2 nyang; tangerine peel and red poria 1.5 nyang each; scutellaria, forsythia, gardenia, platycodon and licorice 1 nyang each; mint and schizonepeta 5 don each. Powder them, make pills with ginger juice paste the size of a firmiana seed, and take fifty down with ginger decoction. This formula is Ijin-tang combined with Yanggyeok-san. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Damum)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The source annotates its own construction, which is unusual and worth taking at face value: Ijin-tang combined with Yanggyeok-san. Pinellia, tangerine peel, poria and licorice are the phlegm engine; scutellaria, forsythia, gardenia, mint and platycodon are the heat-venting half. What results is a formula that both dries and vents, and the venting half is aimed upward and outward — mint, schizonepeta and platycodon all lift toward the throat and head, which is where the indication puts the trouble. Do not confuse this with the Uibang Go formula of the same name; that one directs downward into the lung and is the standard for a productive yellow-sputum cough. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
