Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治老痰, 燥痰, 熱痰. 橘紅(以鹽水浸焙) 一錢二分, 枳實ㆍ黃芩(炒) 各一錢, 白朮ㆍ貝母(炒)ㆍ便香附各九分, 白茯苓ㆍ天花粉(鹽水炒) 各七分, 防風ㆍ連翹各五分, 甘草三分. 右作一貼, 水煎服. 《必用》

Translation

Treats old phlegm, dry phlegm and heat phlegm. Red tangerine peel (salt-water steeped and dry-roasted) 1 don 2 pun; bitter orange and scutellaria (stir-fried) 1 don each; white atractylodes, fritillaria (stir-fried) and child-urine-processed cyperus 9 pun each; white poria and trichosanthes root (salt-water fried) 7 pun each; saposhnikovia and forsythia 5 pun each; licorice 3 pun. Make one packet, decoct in water and take. — Piryong 必用 (Donguibogam · Damum)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Called a modification of Ijin-tang, and the modification is drastic: pinellia is gone entirely. What remains of the parent is tangerine peel, poria and licorice, and fritillaria and trichosanthes root take pinellia's place. That is the correct move for old and dry phlegm, where the parent formula's acrid drying would harden what is already too hard. Saposhnikovia at 5 pun is the odd note in an otherwise cooling formula — a small acrid opening at the surface, so the whole thing does not close inward. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
