Translation

Treats swelling and pain of the throat. Phellodendron, schizonepeta, belamcanda and scutellaria, in equal parts. Powder the above and bind with honey into pills the size of a cherry; hold one pill in the mouth and let it dissolve. — Gani 簡易 (Donguibogam · Inhu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Four herbs and a cherry-sized honey pill held in the mouth until it melts — the delivery is the point. A throat that is swollen and painful can be reached directly, and a lozenge keeps the bitter medicines against the inflamed surface for as long as it takes to dissolve rather than sending them past it. Belamcanda is the chapter's specific for the throat and carries the formula; scutellaria and phellodendron drain the heat above and below it; schizonepeta, the one light, dispersing herb among three cold ones, is there to move what the others would otherwise simply chill into place. 金, metal, is the Lung in the five-phase scheme, and the name says that what is being dispersed is heat lodged in the Lung's own passage. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
