Trichosanthes and Bitter Orange Decoction

Gwarujigak-tang

瓜蔞枳殼湯

The second medicinal is lost at a page break in the source; the detached graphs 枳實 appear at the foot of the same page and the reading is restored as 〔枳實〕. Note that the formula is titled 枳殼 while the composition specifies 枳實 — the discrepancy is in the source and is left as it stands.

Clinical commentary 臨床

Closely related to Gwarujisil-tang in the Phlegm-Rheum chapter at 6.5.5.6, also from the Hoechun, which shares its trichosanthes, bitter orange fruit, platycodon, fritillaria, tangerine peel, scutellaria, amomum, costus and licorice. The difference is what each adds: that formula takes red poria, gardenia and angelica and aims at bound phlegm with chest pain; this one takes chuanxiong, atractylodes lancea, cyperus and apricot kernel and aims at phlegm held down by depressed qi. The three added here are precisely the medicinals this chapter names as the general solvent for depression. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
