Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治太陽病脉微ㆍ身不痒. 石膏二錢, 桂枝ㆍ芍藥ㆍ麻黃各一錢, 甘草三分. 右剉, 作一貼, 入生薑三片, 大棗二枚, 水煎溫服. 《入門》

Translation

Treats taiyang disease with a faint pulse and no itching of the body. Gypsum, 2 don; cinnamon twig, peony and ephedra, 1 don each; licorice, 3 fun. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of fresh ginger and two large jujubes, and decoct in water and take warm. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Han)

Clinical commentary 臨床

One of a pair with the next entry, and the two are separated by a single sign: itching or no itching. No itching means the heat is within and gypsum is added; itching means the evil is still at the surface and apricot kernel is used instead. That is a remarkably fine discrimination to hang two formulas on, and whether or not it holds, it shows how the Shanghanlun tradition worked — one symptom, one substitution, one new name. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
