Translation

Blackens beard and hair as if by divine power. Eclipta 16 geun, gathered in the latter half of the sixth month and the first half of the seventh, not to be washed with water; wring it dry for the juice and sun it facing the sun for five days, stirring without pause. At noon add true ginger juice and good honey, 1 geun each, mix together, and sun and stir as before. After several days it thickens like thin syrup into a paste; store in a porcelain jar. Each day on an empty stomach take a spoonful of the medicine mixed into a cup of good wine, and again in the afternoon. By the twenty-first day, pluck out the white hairs and black ones grow in their place. — Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Mobal)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The only internal formula in this pair of sections, and it closes the dyeing section on the note the chapter opened with — that supplementing is preferable to dyeing. Eclipta is the single most-used hair medicinal in East Asian practice and remains so; the harvest window given here, roughly late July into August, is when the plant is in flower and at its strongest. The instruction not to wash it preserves surface constituents that water would take. Solar reduction over several days with constant stirring is a slow concentration method that avoids heating a heat-labile juice. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
