Translation

Treats the taiyin pattern with jaundice. Artemisia scoparia, 1 nyang; rhubarb, 5 don; gardenia, 2 don. Cut up; take three cups of water and first decoct the artemisia until reduced by half, then add the other two, decoct until reduced by half again, strain and take warm, twice a day. The urine should then flow freely and be truly red in colour, the abdomen gradually subside, and the yellowing leave by way of the urine. — Junggyeong 仲景 (Donguibogam · Han, upper)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Three drugs and a decoction order that is part of the prescription: the artemisia is reduced by half alone before the other two go in, which gives it the longest extraction and makes it unambiguously the chief. The endpoint Zhongjing describes is precise and checkable — urine flowing freely and turning deep red, the abdomen settling, the yellow leaving through the urine — and it is still the best bedside description of a cholestatic jaundice beginning to clear. The rhubarb is here to open the bowel as a second route, not to purge. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
