Ginseng Drain the Lung Decoction

Insamsapye-tang

人參瀉肺湯

The Lung chapter's citation omits the ginseng the formula is named for; the Cough chapter's citation, which builds it from Yanggyeok-san with the mirabilite taken out and five drugs added, supplies it, and it is entered here from that.

Translation

Treats replete heat of the lung. Scutellaria, gardenia, bitter orange, mint, forsythia, apricot kernel, mulberry root bark, rhubarb (wine-steamed), platycodon and licorice 7 pun each. Cut up, make one packet, decoct in water and take. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Pye) ○ Treats hot cough. That is, Cool the Diaphragm Powder with the mirabilite removed and ginseng, bitter orange peel, platycodon, apricot kernel and mulberry root bark added in equal parts, cut up and decocted.

Clinical commentary 臨床

Sabaek-san's mulberry bark with the cooling and purging medicinals of the Fire chapter — and no ginseng, despite the name. The rhubarb is the reason: a hot lung is cleared downward through the large intestine, which is the Ojangyukbu chapter's 1.4 pairing put to use. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
