Set the Spleen Right Powder

Jeongbi-san

한글 정비산  ·  Pinyin Zheng Pi San

正脾散

甘草灸 is printed with 灸, moxibustion, where 炙, roasting, is meant — the usual block-cut exchange; honey-roasted liquorice is intended. 便香附子 is cyperus steeped in child's urine. The rush pith and akebia are the vehicle, decocted separately, and carry no weight of their own.

Translation

Treats swelling over the whole body after childbirth. Blast-fried zedoary, cyperus prepared in child's urine, tangerine peel, fennel and honey-roasted liquorice in equal parts. Powder the above and take 2 don at a time, stirred into a decoction of rush pith and akebia. — Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · Buin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A postpartum swelling formula that works on the qi rather than on the water. Zedoary, cyperus, tangerine peel and fennel are all movers — four aromatics for a belly that is distended and slow — and the only thing in it aimed straight at urine is the vehicle, the rush pith and akebia decoction the powder is stirred into. Setting the spleen right is the whole claim of the name: the swelling is read as the centre having failed to move water on, so the centre is what is treated. Swelling after delivery is common and usually settles by itself, but it is also how pre-eclampsia, a cardiomyopathy of pregnancy and a venous thrombosis announce themselves, and those are measured and imaged, not decocted. **The cyperus is prepared in child's urine, a human-derived material that is not used in contemporary practice; it is recorded here as text.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
