Lindera Smooth the Qi Powder

Oyaksungi-san

한글 오약순기산  ·  Pinyin Wu Yao Shun Qi San

烏藥順氣散

The Bogam enters this formula twice in the Wind chapter, under 中風宜調氣 with its composition and again under 諸風通治 with a second indication; both are given here. The Jijibang's rule quoted in the chapter is that Soseungmyeong-tang and Baepung-tang govern the wind but not the qi, so this and Insam-sungi-san are given to assist them.

Translation

Treats all wind diseases: take this first to disperse and free the pathways of the qi, and then proceed with the wind medicines. It also treats paralysis and joint-running wind. Ephedra, tangerine peel and lindera, 1 don 5 fun each; chuanxiong, angelica dahurica, silkworm, bitter orange and platycodon, 1 don each; dried ginger, 5 fun; licorice, 3 fun. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger and two jujubes, and decoct in water. Treats wind qi pouring into the channels and network vessels, with pain in the four limbs and the sinews and vessels cramping; much sweating is appropriate, and a slight sweat between the hands and feet is best. — Taepyeong Hyeminhwajegukbang 局方 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The classical teaching that wind in the channels is treated by first smoothing Qi — Oyak leads, wind herbs follow. A traditional first reach for numbness and facial palsy alongside needling. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
