Donguibogam

Translation

Ophiopogon, 2 don; ginseng and schisandra, 1 don each. Decoct in water and drink it in the summer months in place of boiled water. Or add astragalus and licorice, 1 don each; or add 2 fun of phellodendron, and taking it makes a man's strength well up — the drugs used raw. At the height of fire's blaze, at the season when metal lies hidden, cold water is cut off from its substance at just this time; and so it is rescued urgently with Saengmaek-san, which removes its damp heat. The lung wishes to gather in and the heart suffers from slackness, and both are gathered in by the sour; and when the heart fire is exuberant it is drained by the sweet. Therefore the sweetness of ginseng is assisted by the sourness of schisandra. Master Sun said: in the summer months take schisandra constantly to supplement the qi of the five viscera — just so. The slight bitter cold of ophiopogon can enrich the source of the water and clear and still the lung qi; and a little phellodendron, bitter and cold, is added to enrich the stream of the water and remove the wilting weakness of both legs. Ginseng, ophiopogon and schisandra generate the pulse — and the pulse is the original qi. (Donguibogam · Seo)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Three herbs, three motions — Insam replenishes, Maekmundong moistens, Omija gathers what remains. Traditionally drunk as a summer tea in Korea; a complete lesson in formula economy. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
