Treats cold mounting with distension and pain. Evodia, half steeped in wine and half in vinegar and baked dry; cubeb and birthwort root 5 don each; large cyperus 1 nyang. Powder them, bind with paste into pills the size of a firmiana seed, and take seventy or eighty with salt decoction. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Jeoneum)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The evodia is halved and steeped two different ways in the same formula — wine to send it outward, vinegar to send it to the liver. The chapter does this repeatedly, and Talmyeong-dan at 4.18 takes it as far as four steepings. **The 靑木香 of this formula is costus, not birthwort.** The Bogam glosses the bare name as 木香 at 草部上 1.18 and keeps a qualifier, 土靑木香, for the root of 쥐방울덩굴 (草部下 1.112.1); the companions — evodia, cubeb, cyperus — are a qi-moving set, and 丹心 is fourteenth-century, before the name moved. **The hazard is in sourcing: what is sold as 靑木香 today is Aristolochia root and carries aristolochic acid, nephrotoxic and a Group 1 carcinogen. Dispense 木香.** The identity is set out at greater length under 靑木香元. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
