勝金丹

The Bogam carries two different formulas under the name 勝金丹: this one, from the Haehak chapter, a two-drug pill of dichroa and areca for cutting off a malaria long unhealed, while the Buin chapter's Deukhyo formula of the same name is a fifteen-drug honey pill that regulates menses missing their term in long childlessness. 菉豆 is printed for 綠豆, mung bean, and the leaf writes 爲末 without 右.

Translation

Treats the various malarias long unhealed; it can cut them off. Dichroa root, 4 nyang (steamed in wine and sun-dried); areca, 1 nyang. Powder them and bind with vinegar paste into pills the size of mung beans. On the night before, at bedtime, take thirty pills down with cold wine; the next day in the early morning take fifteen pills down with cold wine. Avoid all hot broths, soups and gruels. — Gukbang 局方 (Donguibogam · Haehak)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The chapter's two malaria-cutting drugs and nothing else, in the proportion four to one. The processing is the whole of the safety margin the text allows itself: dichroa steamed in wine and sun-dried, which answers the chapter's own caution 但須製熟則不損胃 — only it must be properly processed, and then it will not injure the stomach. Vinegar paste rather than honey binds it, and the pills are mung-bean small so that thirty of them are a modest dose by weight. The timing is the point of the formula. Thirty pills at bedtime on the night before the expected fit and fifteen more at dawn, both down with cold wine, and no hot broth or gruel afterwards — everything arranged to put the drug in the patient ahead of the attack and to keep warmth from provoking the vomiting that dichroa brings on anyway. **Contains dichroa root at four nyang, a violent emetic and hepatotoxic. This must not be prepared. Malaria requires modern antimalarial treatment and prompt diagnosis.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
