Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger, two jujubes and one mume fruit, and decoct in water and take. — Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Haehak)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The second of the chapter's night formulas, and the one that follows Dansim's rule for old malaria exactly: use Blood drugs to draw the evil out of the yin division into the yang, and then disperse it. Carthamus, Korean angelica, red peony and cnidium are the Blood half; bupleurum, kudzu root and cnidium at the top weight are the drawing-out half, with platycodon lifting. Behind them sits most of a Sagunja-tang with magnolia bark and tangerine peel added, which is the chapter's standing assumption at work — a malaria that has lasted long enough to come at night has also emptied the middle, and drawing an evil outward from an empty body simply fails. Dansim's own warning in this chapter is against the harsh prescriptions (峻劑) for precisely this reason. The instruction to arrest it afterwards with Insamjeolhak-eum makes this a two-stage treatment rather than a single prescription: open and disperse first, cut the malaria second. Hoechun's three-tier dosing of 1 don, 7 fun and 3 fun keeps the Blood-moving drugs deliberately light. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
