Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治積聚. 黃連八兩, 芍藥ㆍ當歸ㆍ生地黃ㆍ烏梅各五錢. 爲末, 雄猪肚一具, 入藥於內, 以線縫之, 鋪韭菜二斤, 於鍋內, 蒸之一日, 以藥熟爲度, 取出搗丸梧子大. 空心, 薑湯下七十丸, 或瀉一二次, 以粥補住. 《入門》

Translation

Treats accumulation and gathering. Coptis 8 nyang; peony, angelica, fresh rehmannia and mume fruit 5 don each. Powder them, put the medicine inside the stomach of a boar and sew it shut with thread, spread 2 geun of chives in a pot, and steam it a day, taking the medicine being done as the measure. Take it out, pound and form pills the size of a firmiana seed. On an empty stomach take seventy down with ginger decoction; if there is purging once or twice, restore with congee. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Jeokchwi)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Eight nyang of coptis against five don each of four supporting medicinals — a sixteen-to-one ratio that makes this almost a single-medicinal preparation. The name records it: two and eight, the two ounces against the eight. What makes it interesting is the method. The powder is sewn into a boar's stomach and steamed a day over a bed of chives, so the coptis is carried into the body on a rich, warm, animal medium. That is the design's whole argument — bitter cold at this dose would wreck the stomach taken plain, and the vessel is chosen to answer for it.
