Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治癲癎及心經邪熱, 狂亂精神不爽. 大黃(生) 一兩, 龍腦ㆍ朱砂(水飛)ㆍ牛黃 各一錢. 右爲末, 每服三錢, 生薑汁和蜜水調下. 《丹心》 ○臞仙一名南極延生湯

Translation

Treats withdrawal-epilepsy and evil heat in the heart channel, with mania and disorder and the spirit unclear. Rhubarb (raw), 1 nyang; borneol, cinnabar (water-ground) and bezoar, 1 don each. Powder them and take 3 don at a dose, stirred into ginger juice with honey water. Quxian gives it a second name, South Pole Extend Life Decoction. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Sin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

**This must not be prepared.** Cinnabar, and bezoar carries a BSE risk. The formula is 瀉心湯 reduced to one purgative with three opening medicinals, and it is the lightest of the four draining formulas 5.14 lists for exuberant fire — one nyang of raw rhubarb against the four of 淸心滾痰丸. 心經邪熱, 精神不爽 is a milder indication than mania proper. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
