Sulphur Ointment for the Face

Yuhwang-go

한글 유황고 (면)  ·  Pinyin Liu Huang Gao

硫黃膏

膩粉 is 輕粉, calomel — mercurous chloride. The 湯液篇 entry for 輕粉 gives 亦名膩粉 among its alternative names (一名汞粉, 一名水銀粉, 亦名膩粉, 或曰峭粉. 飛煉水銀而成), while 胡粉, white lead, is 一名定粉, 一名光粉, 一名瓦粉 and does not take it. The corpus formerly entered 膩粉 as 胡粉 here and in five other leaves; that reading is withdrawn. The 官粉 of 白附子散, the next leaf in this section, is a genuine 胡粉 and is unaffected.

Translation

Treats sores on the face, or a red-purple nose, and wind and flour pimples where no medicine has answered. Raw sulphur, angelica dahurica, trichosanthes root and calomel half a don each; three whole scorpions; five cicada sloughs; seven blister beetles with wings and feet removed. Powder them; first melt sesame oil and beeswax together as for a face oil, take it off the fire and stir the powder in evenly. Take a little at a time, apply to the face at bedtime after washing, and keep it from the eyes. In a few days the redness disperses of itself, and for wind and flour pimples one night shows the effect. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Myeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

風刺粉刺 — wind pimples and flour pimples, the tradition's two names for acne. Sulphur applied overnight is still a treatment for it, though nothing else in the formula should go near a face. **Contains calomel — 膩粉, mercurous chloride, a mercury compound — with scorpion and blister beetle, all toxic and all absorbed through the skin. Mercury passes through skin, and this ointment is for nightly use on the face. This must not be prepared.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
