Six Gentlemen Decoction

Yukgunja-tang

한글 육군자탕  ·  Pinyin Liu Jun Zi Tang

六君子湯

Registered from the Qi chapter with all six medicinals at parity. Collation with Damum 6.19.2 gives pinellia and white atractylodes at 1.5 don against 1 don for the middle three and 5 pun for licorice, and adds the ginger and jujubes. The Damum weighting is adopted; the source field retains the Japbyeong (Qi) chapter attribution alongside the Jeongjeon citation given here.

Translation

Treats qi vacuity with abundant phlegm. Pinellia and white atractylodes 1.5 don each; tangerine peel, white poria and ginseng 1 don each; licorice (mix-fried) 5 pun. Cut up, make one packet, add 3 slices of ginger and 2 jujubes, decoct and take. — Uihak Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · Damum)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Sagunja-tang with pinellia and tangerine peel added, and in the Damum weighting it is pinellia and white atractylodes that lead rather than ginseng. That is the section's argument in miniature: where the spleen cannot move and transform, treating the phlegm alone makes more of it, and the passage warns that over-freeing medicinals leave the spleen qi depleted below so that phlegm returns more readily. Supplement the spleen, clear the centre qi, and the phlegm moves down of itself — the chapter calls this treating the root. Add bamboo sap and ginger juice where the spleen cannot transform. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
