Preserve Harmony Pill

Bohwa-hwan

한글 보화환  ·  Pinyin Bao He Wan

保和丸

Registered from the Danggye Simbeop before the Accumulations chapter was translated, in decoction weights. Collated with Jeokchwi 1.13.11 and converted to the pill weights the source gives. A second formula of the same name from the Uigam is registered separately at 1.7.8 as bohwa-hwan-uigam. The Jeongjeon variant appended in the source carries poria and forsythia and omits coptis; recorded in the source text rather than registered separately.

Translation

Treats food accumulation and alcohol accumulation. Hawthorn flesh 1 nyang; pinellia (ginger-processed), radish seed (stir-fried), coptis (stir-fried) and tangerine peel 5 don each; medicated leaven (stir-fried) 3 don; barley sprout (stir-fried) 2 don. Powder them, make pills with medicated leaven paste the size of a firmiana seed, and take fifty to seventy down with plain hot water. One version: hawthorn 5 nyang, medicated leaven and pinellia 3 nyang each, poria, tangerine peel, radish seed, forsythia and barley sprout (stir-fried) 1 nyang each; powder, and separately powder 5 nyang of medicated leaven to make the paste for the pills. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Jeokchwi)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The parent of the food-reducing family and the base from which Daean-hwan, Jwabi-hwan and both augmented leaven pills are built. Hawthorn at a nyang leads, with the rest at half that or less, and coptis is the single cooling medicinal — present because food that sits generates heat. Note that this chapter carries two quite different formulas under the name. The Uigam version at 1.7.8 puts five nyang of white atractylodes in front and is aimed at lumps; this one has no supplementing medicinal at all and is aimed at what has just been eaten. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
