Seize the Tiger Elixir

Chakho-dan

한글 착호단  ·  Pinyin Zhuo Hu Dan

捉虎丹

Powdered and bound with a glutinous rice paste into pills the size of euryale seeds; one pill on an empty stomach, dissolved in warm wine. If it drives the pain to the surface of the foot and the red swelling does not disperse, take another pill; when it is driven to the heart of the sole and black sweat comes out, the root is removed. Also called Ilripgeum-dan. **Note on modern practice: caowu (草烏) is a regulated toxic aconite requiring proper processing; musk is a protected animal product and contemporary preparations substitute synthetic musk.**

Clinical commentary 臨床

The name says it: this formula seizes the pain the way one seizes a tiger. Its instructions describe a chase — drive the pain down to the instep, and if it stops there give another dose until it reaches the sole and comes out as black sweat. Whatever the mechanism, the therapeutic image is precise and consistent with the chapter's whole strategy: whatever is in the leg must be driven downward and out, never held or supplemented in place. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
