Surpassing the Steed Pill

Seungjun-hwan

한글 승준환  ·  Pinyin Sheng Jun Wan

勝駿丸

Two geun of raw rehmannia are washed clean and pounded to a paste, boiled with four seung of good wine into a syrup, and worked into the powdered medicines; each nyang is made into ten pills, one taken chewed fine with wine at bedtime — or pills the size of parasol-tree seeds, 50 with wine. **Taken for half a month, one walks as though flying — hence the name Surpassing the Steed.** In winter, omit the rehmannia and use refined honey instead. **Note on modern practice: aconite is a regulated toxic medicinal; scorpion is used only under professional supervision; musk is a protected animal product and contemporary preparations substitute synthetic musk (muscone).**

Translation

Treats leg qi with cramping and aching pain and walking that will not follow, and removes every illness of weak legs. Chaenomeles 4 nyang; wine-steeped Korean angelica, wine-steeped gastrodia, wine-steeped achyranthes, dry-fried sour jujube seed, wine-steeped prepared rehmannia, and saposhnikovia, 2 nyang each; scorpion with the toxin removed, 1 nyang; aconite, one piece, blast-fried with skin and navel removed; frankincense, myrrh, notopterygium, aucklandia, and licorice, 5 don each; musk 2 don. Powder the above; wash two geun of raw rehmannia clean, pound it to a paste, boil it with four seung of good wine into a syrup, work it into the medicines and pound firm; make ten pills from each nyang, and take one at bedtime, chewed fine and washed down with wine — or form pills the size of parasol-tree seeds and take 50 with wine. Taken for half a month, one walks as though flying, and hence the name Surpassing the Steed. — Samin 三因 (Donguibogam · Jok)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The chapter's most ambitious claim, and it is right there in the name: after half a month you walk as if flying. Four ounces of chaenomeles lead — the standing herb for cramping legs throughout East Asian practice — with the blood-movers and the wind medicines behind. The rehmannia is not in the powder at all but boiled down into a wine syrup that binds it, which is a considerable amount of trouble for a binder and tells you how the formula was regarded. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
