Treats Liver and Kidney both vacuous, with legs and knees aching and wilting and weak, or having taken in wind, cold, and damp Qi so that the legs pain. Wine-steeped achyranthes 1 nyang 5 don; chuanwu aconite, tiger shin bone, and cistanche, 1 nyang each; frankincense and myrrh, 5 don each; chaenomeles, one fruit steamed through. Powder the above, work in the chaenomeles paste with a wine paste and bind pills the size of parasol-tree seeds; take 70 pills with warm wine or salted broth. — Jesaeng 濟生 (Donguibogam · Jok)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The name counts the original four ingredients at a catty apiece; the augmented version adds the resins for pain. Chaenomeles appears here not as a powdered herb but as a steamed paste that binds the whole formula — which is the same treatment it gets in Seungjun-hwan, and a mark of how central it was to leg medicine. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
