Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治痢後脚痛如刀劙, 虎咬之狀, 膝臏腫大, 不能行步, 名曰鶴膝風. 熟地黃ㆍ人參各一錢, 白朮ㆍ黃芪ㆍ當歸ㆍ川芎ㆍ白芍藥ㆍ杜沖ㆍ萆薢各七分, 防風ㆍ防己ㆍ羌活ㆍ牛膝ㆍ甘草各五分, 附子(童便浸三日炮) 七分, 冬則一錢. 右剉, 作一貼, 薑三棗二, 水煎服. 《正傳》

Translation

Treats leg pain after dysentery as though cut with a knife or bitten by a tiger, with the knee and patella swollen large and inability to walk — this is called crane's-knee wind. Prepared rehmannia and ginseng, 1 don each; white atractylodes, astragalus, Korean angelica, cnidium, white peony, eucommia, and dioscorea hypoglauca, 7 fun each; saposhnikovia, stephania, notopterygium, achyranthes, and licorice, 5 fun each; aconite steeped three days in child's urine and blast-fried, 7 fun — 1 don in winter. Cut the above, make one packet, add 3 slices of ginger and 2 jujubes, decoct in water and take. — Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · Jok)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The two defenses of the name are saposhnikovia and stephania — wind out, water down — and everything else in the formula is there to make it survivable for a patient who has just come through dysentery. The description of the pain is the most vivid in the chapter: as though cut with a knife, or bitten by a tiger.
