Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治傷寒大熱ㆍ煩躁ㆍ不得眠, 或差後飮酒復劇者, 及一切熱毒. 黃連ㆍ黃芩ㆍ黃栢ㆍ梔子各一錢二分半. 右剉, 作一貼, 水煎服. 《活人》

Translation

Treats cold damage with great heat, vexing agitation and inability to sleep; or the case that grows severe again after recovery through drinking wine; and all heat toxin. Coptis, scutellaria, phellodendron and gardenia, 1 don 2 fun 5 ri each. Cut up, make one packet and decoct in water. — Hwarin 活人 (Donguibogam · Han, lower)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Four cold bitter drugs in equal measure, one for each level and one to carry the rest out: coptis for the heart and middle, scutellaria for the lung and upper, phellodendron for the kidney and lower, gardenia to drain the whole through the urine. There is nothing in it to moderate or protect, which makes it the most straightforwardly cold formula in the repertoire and limits how long it can be given.
