Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治陽明病, 汗多ㆍ煩渴, 脉洪大. 石膏五錢, 知母二錢, 甘草七分, 粳米半合. 右剉, 作一貼, 水煎服. 《入門》 ○本方加人參一錢, 名曰人參白虎湯. ○本方加蒼朮一錢, 名曰蒼朮白虎湯. 《丹心》

Translation

Treats yangming disease with profuse sweating, vexation and thirst, and a flooding large pulse. Gypsum, 5 don; anemarrhena, 2 don; licorice, 7 fun; non-glutinous rice, half a hop. Cut up, make one packet and decoct in water. — Immun 入門 ○ Adding 1 don of ginseng to the base formula gives <span class='sochu'>Insam-baekho-tang</span> 人參白虎湯. ○ Adding 1 don of atractylodes lancea to the base formula gives <span class='sochu'>Changchul-baekho-tang</span> 蒼朮白虎湯. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Han, upper)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Named for the white tiger of the west, whose autumn wind cuts summer's heat. Gypsum does the clearing; the rice and licorice guard the stomach so the cold minerals do no harm on the way through, and the rice also holds fluid in a patient losing it through sweat. The pulse is the gate: flooding and large, not deep. The two variants the Bogam gives here are the standard ones — ginseng where the fluids and qi are already spent, atractylodes lancea where damp is bound up with the heat. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
