Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治燥痰, 鬱痰, 酒痰. 上三味爲末, 蜜丸芡實大, 每一丸, 食後, 及臨臥時, 噙化嚥下. 凡積痰, 非靑黛ㆍ瓜蔞, 不除. 《入門》

Translation

Treats dry phlegm, depressed phlegm and alcohol phlegm. Powder the three medicinals named above, make honey pills the size of a euryale seed, and take one after meals and at bedtime, held in the mouth to dissolve and then swallowed. For accumulated phlegm of any kind, without indigo and trichosanthes it will not be removed. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Damum)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Three medicinals, and the source ends with a flat assertion: accumulated phlegm will not shift without indigo and trichosanthes. That is a stronger claim than the chapter usually makes and it explains why these two turn up together throughout — in Jeoljae's Transform Phlegm Pill, in Clear Fire and Sweep Phlegm Pill, and here on their own with cyperus added to move the qi.
