Two Worthies Powder

Ihyeon-san

한글 이현산  ·  Pinyin Er Xian San

二賢散

Carries two alternative names in the chapter: 一名二賢湯 attributed to Deukhyo 得效, and 滌痰散 in the Hoechun 回春 tradition. The alcohol phlegm passage at 6.5.8 lists 滌痰散 among its recommended formulas, which is this same prescription under the third name.

Translation

Clears the lung, disperses phlegm, downbears qi and resolves alcohol toxin. Red tangerine peel 1 geun, licorice 4 nyang, salt half a nyang. Steep in water to a finger's depth above, boil dry in a pan, then dry-roast and powder. Take two spoons morning and evening in weak ginger decoction or plain hot water. Also called Ihyeon-tang. — Uihak Gangmok 綱目 (Donguibogam · Damum)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The same salt-boiled tangerine peel method as Moisten and Downbear Pill, with licorice at four nyang instead of two and the peel left whole rather than stripped. The claim to resolve alcohol toxin puts it in the alcohol phlegm section as well, where it appears under yet another name. Three names for one formula is a good illustration of why the Bogam's cross-references need collating rather than reading at face value — the same prescription can look like three different recommendations. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
