Translation

Nourishes the Blood specifically, blackening beard and hair. Lotus stamen, raw rehmannia, pagoda tree fruit, and acanthopanax bark 2 nyang each; Aleppo gall 6 pieces. Pound in a wooden or stone mortar, put the medicine in a raw silk bag, and place it with 10 geun of good clear wine in a clean jar — steeping one month in spring and winter, twenty days in autumn, ten days in summer — sealing the mouth tightly. When the full number of days has passed, drink as much as you please, taking drunkenness as the measure. It should be taken on consecutive days until finished; when the wine is gone, white beard and hair blacken of themselves. If they do not, make it again and take it — divine effect. — Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Mobal)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The name means what it says, and drunkenness is prescribed as the dose — a striking instruction that a modern reader should treat as a period feature rather than a method. The same inverse seasonal schedule appears here as in Chinggeum-dan, ten days in summer against a month in winter. As a formulation it is coherent: lotus stamen and Aleppo gall are astringent, rehmannia and pagoda tree fruit cool and nourish Blood, and acanthopanax opens the channels so the whole reaches the surface. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
