Translation

A song runs: Zhongshan Return to Childhood Wine — it is found in every place among men; whoever has the good fortune to meet with it is straightway an elder of Penglai. — Iris seed 1 seung buried in earth three days and taken out; iris root washed and sliced, 1 seung; yellow millet 2 mal boiled in water to a mash. Aged leaven 2 cakes powdered, and wine leaven 2 bowls, mixed together in one place with the iris seed above and made into wine. When it has matured, take a further 1 seung of iris seed and root, boil in water to ten bubblings, and add to the wine for three days. Each day stir it evenly and remove the dregs. Drink to drunkenness according to capacity; when the wine is finished, the beard and hair are wholly black. The colour of the wine is black as lacquer. — Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Mobal)

Clinical commentary 臨床

This is a home brewing recipe rather than a dispensary formula — millet mash, leaven, yeast, and a medicinal added twice, once into the ferment and once after. The wine is described as black as lacquer, which iris seed and root would plausibly produce, and it is worth asking whether the reported effect owes anything to the drink staining what it touches. The opening song is preserved because the Donguibogam preserves such things; Penglai is the isle of the immortals. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
