Arrest Wheezing Decoction

Jeongcheon-tang

한글 정천탕 · Pinyin Ding Chuan Tang

定喘湯

The chapter carries a second 定喘湯, the Uigam's verse formula with ass-hide glue and poppy husk, registered as Jeongcheon-tang-gae. 不須薑 — no ginger is needed — is worth keeping, since almost every other formula in the chapter adds it.

Translation

The verse runs: every illness has had its prescription from the first, but the one dread is wheezing panting, hardest of all to withstand — ephedra, mulberry root bark and apricot kernel, then look for perilla seed; ginkgo nut and coltsfoot flower are better still; licorice and scutellaria together with pinellia; boil it in water a hundred times and no ginger is needed; when the sick man meets this elixir of the immortals, only after taking it does he know Arrest Wheezing Decoction. ○ A divine prescription for wheezing panting. Ephedra, 3 don; apricot kernel, 1 don 5 fun; sliced scutellaria, pinellia, mulberry root bark, perilla seed, coltsfoot flower and licorice, 1 don each; ginkgo nutthat is, the silver apricot, twenty-one of them, shelled, broken and dry-fried to a yellow colour. Cut up, make one packet, and decoct in water, to be taken at any hour. — Manbyeong Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Mahwang opens what Baekgwa restrains — the opposing chief pair that lets the formula disperse and hold the Lung at once. The classical first name in wheezing, with ginkgo nut in the leading role. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
