Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治傷寒表不解, 因心下有水氣, 乾嘔ㆍ氣逆ㆍ發熱ㆍ咳喘. 麻黃ㆍ芍藥ㆍ五味子ㆍ半夏(製) 各一錢半, 細辛ㆍ乾薑ㆍ桂枝ㆍ甘草(灸) 各一錢. 右剉, 作一貼, 水煎服. 服此渴者, 裏氣溫, 水欲散也. 《正傳》

Translation

Treats cold damage where the exterior is unresolved and there is water qi below the heart, with dry retching, qi counterflow, fever, cough and wheezing. Ephedra, peony, schisandra and processed pinellia, 1 don 5 fun each; asarum, dried ginger, cinnamon twig and roasted licorice, 1 don each. Cut up, make one packet and decoct in water. If thirst arises after taking it, the interior qi has warmed and the water is about to disperse. — Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · Han, upper)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The counterpart to the Major Dragon, and the difference is water rather than heat. Ephedra, cinnamon twig, asarum and dried ginger make up as warm and drying a combination as the repertoire has, which is right for the patient coughing up thin clear fluid — and schisandra and peony are in to rein that in, sour and inward against the four acrid outward drugs. That tension is what makes it safe to take for more than a day. The closing line is the best piece of clinical advice in the entry: thirst after taking it is a good sign, not an adverse one, because it means the water has stopped pooling. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
