Rectify the Qi Decoction

Jeonggi-tang

한글 정기탕  ·  Pinyin Zheng Qi Tang

正氣湯

The Bogam carries two different formulas under the name 正氣湯: this one, from the Haehak chapter, for wind malaria at its onset, while the Jinaek chapter's Immun formula of the same name is three drugs that downbear yin fire to stop night sweating. 治同上 refers to Sansa-tang immediately above it, whose indication is 治風瘧初起; the source marker is printed 醫鍳 for 醫鑑.

Treats the same as the above. Bupleurum, peucedanum, cnidium, angelica dahurica, pinellia, ophiopogon, areca, tsaoko, green tangerine peel and red poria, 1 don each; cinnamon twig and licorice, 5 fun each. Cut the above, make one packet, add three slices of ginger and two jujubes, and decoct in water and take. — Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Haehak)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Ten drugs at a don and two envoys at five fun, and the composition is best read against Sansa-tang, the formula whose indication it borrows. Where Sansa-tang answers wind at the surface with ephedra, notopterygium, schizonepeta and perilla, this one keeps only the head pair — cnidium and angelica dahurica — and fills the rest of the formula with the malaria-cutting group: areca, tsaoko and green tangerine peel, the same three that carry Cheongpi-eum. Bupleurum and peucedanum turn the pivot, pinellia and red poria take the phlegm and damp, and cinnamon twig is left at five fun as the last trace of the exterior. Ophiopogon in such company is the interesting choice. Everything else here is drying or moving, and a single don of it is the formula's one concession to the fluids — the chapter is aware that a wind malaria answered with aromatics and bitters will parch a patient who is already sweating by fits. **Contains pinellia, which is toxic raw and must be properly processed before use.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
