Translation

Treats qi phlegm congesting and abundant. Peucedanum, pinellia and red poria 1 don each; tangerine peel, perilla leaf and bitter orange 7 pun each; costus and licorice 5 pun each. Cut up, make one packet, add 5 slices of ginger and 1 mume fruit, decoct in water and take. — Injae Jikji 直指 (Donguibogam · Damum)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Peucedanum and pinellia as co-chiefs is the classical pairing for phlegm that is both hot and congested: peucedanum downbears and cools while pinellia dries and warms, and neither alone would suit. The single mume fruit at the end is the interesting touch — sour and astringent in an otherwise dispersing formula, gathering the qi so that the acrid medicinals do not simply scatter it. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
