Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治神魂不寧, 驚悸不得睡. 眞珠母 七錢半, 熟地黃ㆍ當歸 各一兩半, 人參ㆍ酸棗仁(炒)ㆍ栢子仁ㆍ犀角ㆍ白茯神 各一兩, 沉香ㆍ龍齒 各五錢. 右爲末, 蜜丸梧子大, 朱砂爲衣, 每四五十丸, 薄荷湯下, 日二服. 此方眞珠母爲君, 龍齒佐之. 眞珠母入肝經爲第一, 龍齒與肝同類也. 龍齒虎睛, 人皆以爲鎭心藥, 殊不知龍齒安魂, 虎睛定魄. 龍能變化, 故魂遊而不足. 虎能專靜, 故魄止而有守. 若魄不寧者宜用虎睛, 魂飛揚者宜用龍齒. 《本事》

Translation

Treats the spirit and ethereal soul unquiet, with fright palpitations and inability to sleep. Mother-of-pearl 7 don 5 fun; prepared rehmannia and Korean angelica 1 nyang 5 don each; ginseng, dry-fried jujube kernel, biota seed, rhinoceros horn and poria with hostwood 1 nyang each; aquilaria and fossilized tooth 5 don each. Powder the above, make honey pills the size of parasol-tree seeds, coat them with cinnabar, and take forty or fifty at a time with a mint decoction, twice daily. In this formula mother-of-pearl is the sovereign and fossilized tooth assists it. Mother-of-pearl is first among the drugs that enter the liver channel, and fossilized tooth is of the same kind as the liver. Everyone takes fossilized tooth and tiger's eye for spirit-settling drugs, not knowing that fossilized tooth quiets the ethereal soul while tiger's eye settles the corporeal soul. The dragon can transform, and so the ethereal soul wanders and falls short; the tiger can be wholly still, and so the corporeal soul halts and keeps guard. Clinical commentary 臨床

A blood-nourishing sleep formula with two mineral drugs set on top of it. Rehmannia, Korean angelica, jujube kernel and biota seed are the ordinary furniture of a liver that cannot hold the ethereal soul at night; mother-of-pearl and fossilized tooth are the weight laid over them, and the leaf argues for that weight at unusual length rather than simply listing it. The reasoning is worth reading as reasoning. Fossilized tooth and tiger's eye were both sold as spirit-settling drugs, and the Bonsabang insists they do different work — one for the soul that flies up and will not stay, one for the soul that has lost its guard. Whatever is made of the physiology, it is a real clinical distinction between the patient who cannot fall asleep from agitation and the patient who wakes unanchored, and the formula is built for the first. **Contains rhinoceros horn, from a protected species.
