Translation

Treats shaoyin disease with abdominal fullness and pain and urine passing freely, or with diarrhoea, or with retching. Poria, peony and blast-fried aconite, 3 don each; atractylodes, 2 don. Cut up, make one packet, add five slices of ginger and decoct in water. — Jeongjeon 正傳 ○ Its old name was Hyeonmu-tang 玄武湯; later ages avoided the tabooed graph and changed it to Jinmu-tang. (Donguibogam · Han, upper)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Urine passing freely is the detail that makes the diagnosis. Abdominal fullness with retained urine would be water bound below; here the urine runs, so the water is not dammed but loose and overflowing, which happens when the yang can no longer hold it in place. Aconite supplies that yang, poria and atractylodes move the water, and peony — the one drug that looks out of place — relieves the abdominal pain and stops the warming drugs from drying the patient out. The old name is the northern black warrior, the water-governing deity, which is as good a mnemonic for the formula as any. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
