Bamboo Sap Reach the Phlegm Pill

Jungnyeokdaldam-hwan

한글 죽력달담환  ·  Pinyin Zhu Li Da Tan Wan

竹瀝達痰丸

The chlorite schist weight is lost in the source, which reads 靑礞石(碎) ▨兩. A detached 一 appears at the foot of the same page alongside a stray 焇, the variant graph for 硝, and the saltpetre calcined with it is given at 1 nyang; 〔一〕兩 is restored on that basis. Bamboo sap is measured in bowls and used as a processing medium rather than weighed, and is entered without a gram figure.

Translation

Able to move phlegm out by way of the stool without damaging the original qi, with marked effect. Danxi said that phlegm in the four limbs will not open without bamboo sap, and this is that medicine. Pinellia (ginger-processed), tangerine peel (white pith removed), white atractylodes (lightly stir-fried), white poria, rhubarb (wine-steeped, steamed and sun-dried) and scutellaria (wine-fried) 2 nyang each; ginseng and licorice (mix-fried) 1.5 nyang each; chlorite schist (crushed) 1 nyang and saltpetre 1 nyang, calcined together to a gold colour; aloeswood 5 don. Powder them; take one and a half large bowls of bamboo sap and three spoons of ginger juice, mix through evenly and sun-dry, repeating five or six times; then bind with bamboo sap and ginger juice into pills the size of a small bean, and take a hundred at bedtime down with rice broth or ginger decoction. Also called Jungnyeok Undam-hwan. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Damum)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The claim in the first line is the formula's whole argument: it moves phlegm out through the stool without damaging the original qi. Rhubarb is present, but wine-steeped, steamed and sun-dried, which strips most of its purgative violence; ginseng and licorice at 1.5 nyang hold the centre. Set this against Control Drool Elixir, which attacks the same problem with kansui and euphorbia and cannot be given to a depleted patient at all — the two formulas bracket the range of what the chapter is willing to do. Danxi's line about phlegm in the four limbs is the reason for the extraordinary bamboo sap procedure. Five or six cycles of soaking the powder in sap and drying it means the finished pill is saturated with a medicinal that would ordinarily be added at the end and taken fresh. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
