Wondrous Response Elixir (Jeokchwi)

Myoeung-dan

한글 묘응단(적취)  ·  Pinyin Miao Ying Dan

妙應丹

Distinct from the 妙應丹 of the Phlegm-Rheum chapter, which is another name for Gongyeon-dan 控涎丹. The two share only the name. The aconite is hollowed and the sal ammoniac packed inside it, so the weight given is for the two together; the gram figure entered is for the aconite alone at 4 × 7 don.

Translation

Treats gu toxin taken in with food and drink; or the eating of water and land fruits and gourds whose seeds and eggs enter the belly and become worms, snakes, fish and turtles; or retained food and standing rheum bound into concretions. Aconite 4 pieces of 7 don weight each — raw, skin and navel removed, hollowed out into a jar, filled with sal ammoniac to a combined weight of 1 nyang 7 don, wrapped in dough and roasted through, the dough then discarded; long pepper, costus, green tangerine peel and psoralea 3.5 nyang each. Powder them, make pills with wheat paste the size of a firmiana seed, and take thirty down with a decoction of fresh ginger and tangerine peel. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Jeokchwi)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The processing is the formula. Four aconite tubers are hollowed into small jars, sal ammoniac is packed inside them, and the whole is sealed in dough and roasted — so the two most dangerous ingredients are cooked into one another before anything else is added. That is the same containment logic as the boar's stomach in Tonghyeonipal-dan at 1.8.8. The aetiology given is worth recording as a historical belief rather than a mechanism: seeds and eggs eaten with raw fruit are thought to hatch in the belly into worms, snakes, fish and turtles. Behind it lies a real observation, that raw produce transmits intestinal parasites. **Contains raw-processed aconite and sal ammoniac, both toxic. Must not be prepared or taken. Suspected parasitic infection or food poisoning requires medical diagnosis and treatment.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
