Donguibogam

Translation

Treats dry retching, or dry retching with cold reversal of the hands and feet. Tangerine peel, 4 nyang; fresh ginger, 8 nyang. Cut up, boil in seven cups of water down to three cups, and have the patient sip it a little at a time, barely warm. ○ Also called Jinpi-tang. Best of all for dry retching: it cures as soon as it is swallowed. — Hwarin 活人 · Junggyeong 仲景 (Donguibogam · Guto)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two drugs in very large doses and a mouthful at a time, barely warm — the dose is in the whole decoction, not the sip. 乾嘔, dry retching, is retching that brings nothing up, and the Bogam treats it as a disorder of qi rather than of content, which is why the formula is only the two qi-moving drugs the chapter names at 2.3 as the mainstays. 下咽卽愈, cured as soon as it is swallowed, is the Junggyeong school's claim for it. Ginger in this quantity is a real antiemetic, and the claim is not absurd. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
