Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治霍亂後, 煩熱口乾, 脈數, 或頭身痛. 柴胡ㆍ白朮ㆍ白茯苓ㆍ白芍藥ㆍ當歸ㆍ陳皮ㆍ麥門冬ㆍ梔子仁ㆍ甘草各八分, 人參五分, 五味子十粒. 右剉, 作一貼, 入棗二ㆍ梅一ㆍ燈心一團, 煎服. 《回春》

Translation

Treats vexing heat after sudden turmoil, with a dry mouth and a rapid pulse, or aching of the head and body. Bupleurum, white atractylodes, white poria, white peony, Chinese angelica, tangerine peel, ophiopogon, gardenia kernel and licorice, 8 fun each; ginseng, 5 fun; schisandra, ten grains. Cut up, make one packet, add two jujubes, one smoked plum and a bundle of juncus, and decoct. — Manbyeong Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Gwallan)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The three whites are atractylodes, poria and peony, and the formula adds ginseng and bupleurum to them for the fever that will not settle after an acute illness. The combination is a harmonizing one rather than a cooling one — only gardenia is cold — and that is the judgment being made: residual heat in a patient drained by vomiting and diarrhoea is treated by rebuilding rather than by draining. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
