Clinical commentary 臨床

Three medicinals cooked together in vinegar and then separated — the sparganium and curcuma are taken out and the genkwa is fried alone in what vinegar remains. Vinegar is doing double duty: it directs the pair to the liver and it moderates the genkwa, which is a drastic purgative in the kansui and euphorbia family. The Deukhyo variant drops the genkwa altogether, which makes it a safe formula and a quite different one. The chapter records both without ranking them. **The primary version contains genkwa, which is toxic and a drastic purgative. Contraindicated in pregnancy and not suitable for self-administration.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
