Ten Spirits Decoction (Epidemic chapter)

Sipsin-tang

한글 십신탕  ·  Pinyin Shi Shen Tang

十神湯

The Bogam carries more than one version of 十神湯. The Cold Damage chapter prints an Immun version with the same ten drugs all at one don, for doubly-affected wind cold, and it is registered as sipsin-tang; this Jeongjeon version doubles the pueraria to two don, changes the ginger and scallion to five and three, and carries the epidemic indication.

Translation

Treats a season out of order with epidemic disease running wild. Pueraria, 2 don; red peony, cimicifuga, angelica dahurica, chuanxiong, tangerine peel, ephedra, perilla leaf, cyperus and licorice, 1 don each. Cut up, make one packet, add five slices of ginger and three stalks of scallion white, and decoct. — Jeongjeon 正傳 ○ This formula is Seungmagalgeun-tang combined with Gungji-hyangso-san, with ephedra added, and is an agent for raising a sweat. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · On)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Ten drugs, but not quite the ten of the other Sipsin-tang: here pueraria is doubled to two don and the rest stand at one, and the Immun's gloss at the foot of the leaf spells the construction out — Seungmagalgeun-tang combined with Gungji-hyangso-san, with ephedra added to make it sweat. That gloss is worth more than the name. It says the formula is three recipes stacked: pueraria and cimicifuga for the yangming surface, cyperus and perilla leaf for the stagnant qi, chuanxiong and angelica dahurica for the head, and ephedra to force the pores. Five slices of ginger and three stalks of scallion white at the end push it the same way again. Given for a season out of order and an epidemic running wild — which is to say, a dispensary formula for the first days of an outbreak, when nobody yet knows what the illness is. Flat, broad formulas of this kind are weak individually and wide collectively, and that was the point of them. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
