Cyperus and Perilla Powder (Epidemic chapter)

Hyangso-san

한글 향소산  ·  Pinyin Xiang Su San

香蘇散

The Bogam carries more than one version of 香蘇散. The Cold Damage chapter prints an Immun version of the same five drugs at lighter weights — cyperus and perilla leaf at two don each — for four-season cold damage, and it is registered as hyangso-san; this Deukhyo version raises the cyperus to three don and the perilla leaf to two don five fun and carries the epidemic indication. In the closing anecdote the transcription prints 稽䫙 where 稽顙, to bow the forehead to the ground, is expected, and prints 敎 against a collation note giving 教 for the first edition; both are printed here as the transcription has them.

Translation

Treats epidemic disease in any of the four seasons. Cyperus, 3 don; perilla leaf, 2 don 5 fun; tangerine peel, 1 don 5 fun; atractylodes lancea and licorice, 1 don each. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger and two stalks of scallion white, and decoct in water. — Deukhyo 得效 ○ Long ago a white-haired old man gave this formula to a rich household and told them to make it up and distribute it. A great epidemic came upon the city, and all the sick who took it recovered. The plague demon questioned the rich man, and the rich man told it the truth. The demon said, "This old man has now taught three people," bowed its forehead to the ground and withdrew. — Gukbang 局方 (Donguibogam · On)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The same five drugs as the Immun's Hyangso-san, but in heavier and differently graded weights: cyperus at three don, perilla leaf at two and a half, tangerine peel at a don and a half, atractylodes lancea and licorice at one. Where the Immun's version is a gentle all-purpose cold remedy, this one is dosed for an epidemic, and the indication is widened to match — epidemic disease in any of the four seasons. Then the leaf tells a story from the Gukbang, and it should be read as a story. A white-haired old man gives the formula to a rich family and tells them to make it up and give it away; the city falls ill, everyone who takes it recovers, and the plague demon comes to ask who is behind it. The householder answers truthfully, the demon remarks that the old man has now taught three people, bows and withdraws. That is a note on the social history of charitable dispensing, not a statement about pharmacology, and the chapter keeps several such passages. What the formula actually offers is five mild drugs that will not hurt a patient while an illness declares itself, at a dose large enough to be felt. It suits the patient under strain who catches whatever is going round. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
