Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治陽明證, 小便不利ㆍ汗少ㆍ脉浮而渴. 赤茯苓ㆍ猪苓ㆍ阿膠ㆍ澤瀉ㆍ滑石各一錢. 右四味剉, 水煎, 臨熟入阿膠, 煎烊, 溫服. 《仲景》

Translation

Treats the yangming pattern with inhibited urination, scant sweating, a floating pulse and thirst. Red poria, polyporus, donkey-hide gelatin, alisma and talc, 1 don each. Cut up the four drugs and decoct in water; as it comes to the boil add the donkey-hide gelatin, decoct until it melts, and take warm. — Junggyeong 仲景 (Donguibogam · Han, upper)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Five drugs at the same dose, four of them draining and one of them not — and the gelatin is why this formula is not simply Five-Ingredient Poria Powder. Water bound with heat must be drained, but draining costs yin, and a patient already thirsty cannot afford that. So donkey-hide gelatin goes in, added last and off the hard boil so it melts rather than burns, to replace what the other four take out.
