Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治腎積. 厚朴七錢, 黃連五錢, 川練子三錢, 白茯苓ㆍ澤瀉ㆍ菖蒲各二錢, 玄胡索一錢半, 全蝎ㆍ附子ㆍ獨活各一錢, 川烏ㆍ丁香ㆍ巴豆霜各五分, 肉桂二分. 右末, 蜜丸梧子大. 鹽湯下, 服如上法. 《正傳》

Translation

Treats kidney accumulation. Magnolia bark 7 don; coptis 5 don; toosendan 3 don; white poria, alisma and acorus 2 don each; corydalis 1.5 don; scorpion, aconite (fu zi) and pubescent angelica 1 don each; aconite (chuan wu), clove and croton frost 5 pun each; cinnamon bark 2 pun. Powder them, make honey pills the size of a firmiana seed, and take down with salt decoction, dosing as above. — Uihak Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · Jeokchwi)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The only one of the five where coptis is not chief — magnolia bark leads and coptis drops to 5 don, the lowest of the set, because a kidney accumulation is read as the coldest. Aconite, scorpion and clove come in instead, and salt decoction as the vehicle directs the whole formula to the kidney. Running piglet is the most vividly named of the five accumulations and the section at 1.18 calls it the hardest of them to treat, noting that it arises from fright and terror and that what surges to the throat follows the spirit upward. The formula at 1.8.9 treats the same condition from the opposite direction, with no purgative at all. **Contains croton frost and two aconite preparations, all toxic.
